2012 Dodge Avenger | Review, Interior, Exterior, Price, Engine. – Now, The 2012 Dodge Avenger ranks 19 out of 19 Affordable Midsize Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 51 published reviews and test drives of the Dodge Avenger, and our analysis of reliability and safety data. With some of the worst four cylinder fuel economy ratings in the class, test drivers think the 2012 Dodge Avenger can’t compete with other midsize cars.

With so many great midsize cars that stand out for their modern styling, fuel efficient engines and roomy interiors, it’s hard to get to the front of the pack. With its cramped back seat, small trunk, underpowered base engine and weak brakes, the 2012 Dodge Avenger stands out, but not in a good way. Additionally, the Avenger lacks standard tech features such as Bluetooth and iPod integration.

Chrysler carries over the base Avenger powertrain this year, and for most everyday buyers, the 2.4-liter, 173-horsepower four-cylinder and four speed automatic are best left to rental fleets. The Avenger’s 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 was new in the 2011 model year, and it’s a vast upgrade. It lets loose 283 horsepower in the front driver, and its 260 pound feet of torque can twist its front tires a little too vigorously sometimes. Torque steer’s an issue: while the engine winds up smoothly, and puts out more power than the high output engines from Hyundai, Ki and Ford, the power makes the Avenger’s strut and multilink suspension dance. The Avenger weaves on takeoff with left right swings of torque steer before it settles down into a straight ahead set. The Avenger has old fashioned hydraulic power steering, and a lower ride height in front than in back. Together they give it decent road manners and feedback, but it’s not happy and taut at most speeds like a Fusion is aside from acceleration, it’s uninspired.

The Dodge Avenger is offered in four trim levels: SE, SXT, SXT Plus, and R/T. Two engine choices are offered on the Avenger, a 2.4-liter four cylinder engine, or a 3.6-liter flex fuel V6 engine. Four cylinder engines can be had with either a four-speed automatic transmission, or six speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. The V6 engine is matched to a six speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. Standard and optional equipment include leather wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats, cruise control, LED brake lights, aluminum wheels, multimedia centre with 30 gigabytes of internal memory, USB port, Bluetooth streaming audio and DVD video capability. Safety features found on every Avenger include stability and traction control systems, anti lock brakes with brake assist, active front head restraints, six airbags, tire pressure monitoring and a security system.

2012 Dodge Avenger Interior :
2012 Dodge Avenger Interior. The Avenger’s interior best epitomizes the car’s close-but-no-cigar aspect. Greatly improved upon, the Avenger boasts soft touch materials and tight construction; both are among the best you’ll find in a midsize sedan. However, the look is a tad generic, the available in car electronics are a bit behind the times and there isn’t as much space for passengers.

There is a similar situation under the hood. The base four cylinder is barely adequate (especially with the SE’s four speed automatic) and sounds unrefined. The V6 engine found in the SXT Plus and R/T is very strong, however, boasting the most power in its class as well as strong fuel economy. Handling is also pretty good, although again, not quite up to the class leaders.

Dodge carries over the 2012 Avenger’s mini Charger look virtually unchanged. That’s actually a good thing; the Dodge Avenger has needed lots of improvement, and it’s received it incrementally, but especially on the outside, this mid-size sedan already had a lock on its modern Dodge brand identity, with its aggressive stance, crosshair grille, and upkicked rear quarters.

The 2012 Dodge Avenger was refreshed for 2011, and its interior received a new instrument panel and higher quality materials. Most test drivers like the Avenger’s interior, but a few point out that some items, like the map lights and gear selector, still feel cheap. Some reviewers dislike the Avenger’s optional navigation system, and one says the gauge cluster is hard to read because the numbers are red. See the full list of 2012 Dodge Avenger specs.

2012 Dodge Avenger Exterior :
2012 Dodge Avenger Exterior. – The 2012 Dodge Avenger is a midsize sedan available in SE, SXT, SXT Plus and R/T trim levels. The base SE comes standard with 17-inch steel wheels, keyless entry, full power accessories, cruise control, air-conditioning, a height adjustable driver seat, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat and a four speaker sound system with a CD player and an auxiliary audio jack. Optional are satellite radio and a package containing heated front seats and an eight way power driver seat.

The SXT adds to the SE’s standard equipment with 17-inch alloy wheels, an upgraded transmission, heated folding mirrors, automatic climate control, an eight-way power driver seat, a leather wrapped steering wheel, a trip computer and a six-speaker sound system with satellite radio. A touchscreen stereo interface that includes digital music storage is optional. The SXT Plus includes that touchscreen interface along with a V6 engine, 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlamps and foglamps. Both SXT models can be equipped with the Cold Weather Group, which adds heated front seats and remote ignition.

Inside is where the Avenger still doesn’t come close enough to matching the look of the larger Charger in either appearance or touch. The cabin clearly wears less expensive trim than the Chrysler 200 (with which it’s closely related), but even compared to other affordable mid size sedans it looks quite good from a few paces back. The dash cap’s a little more sculpted, the climate controls are streamlined, and some nice details of bright and matte plastic contrast with the softer-touch pieces.

2012 Dodge Avenger Engine :
2012 Dodge Avenger Engine. – The front wheel drive 2012 Dodge Avenger has two engines and two transmissions. The base SE trim has a 173 horsepower, 2.4-liter four cylinder engine and four speed automatic transmission. The SXT trim also gets the four cylinder engine, but comes with a six speed automatic. Avenger SXT Plus and R/T models come with a 283 horsepower, 3.6 liter Pentastar V6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission.

The EPA rates the four cylinder 2012 Dodge Avenger at 21/30 mpg city/highway with a four-speed automatic transmission and 20/31 with the six-speed automatic, while the V6 engine is rated 19/29 mpg. The Avenger’s four cylinder EPA ratings are among the worst in the class. Reviewers are not impressed with the base four cylinder engine. They say it’s sufficient compared with similarly equipped cars in this class. However, they like the 3.6 liter V6, which is plenty powerful and fun to drive.
