BMW‘s upcoming exotic, based on the Vision Efficient Dynamics Concept, is rumored to due out in 2013 and possibly carry the M8 badge. The rumors, however, sound a bit too extreme. What’s hard to believe is the reported engine and drivetrain, with the M8 powered by a hybrid V10 with electric motors situated at each axle, to deliver all wheel drive performance. According to Autozietung, the M8 will use a V10 engine (unlikely as BMW has dropped V10s from its lineup in favor of more powerful and efficient twin turbo motors). Two electric motors will help deliver a boost of power at each axle, with the front motor creating anywhere from 80 to 115-hp, while the rear motor will deliver 50-hp.

Automobile recently revealed that German automaker BMW is still working on the M8, the long awaited successor to the original 1981 M1. There are still disagreements to be worked over as BMW’s CEO Norbert Reithofer isn’t quite all for it yet, while M Division president Friedrich Nitschke “doesn’t take no for an answers.” One solution, Automobile offers, is to put the M8 on the same carbon fiber and aluminum platform as the i8. The car is still a ways off but significant steps have been made like the M1 Hommage pictured above.

2013 BMW M8 Interior :
The new model, rumoured to be called the M8, will be based on the Vision EfficientDynamics concept unveiled at the IAA 2009. Compared to the concept, the upcoming car will be five inches longer, 1.24 meters high, 1.90 meters wide, and will feature a 2+2 configuration. The hybrid combination consists of a V10 engine from the current M5 and two electric engines; one at the front and one at the back. The first electric motor will deliver 80-115hp and the back one will deliver more than 50hp.

2013 BMW M8 Exterior :
New reports this week suggest that BMW’s M1 tribute, the 2008 Hommage concept, could soon reach production wearing an M8 badge. It wouldn’t be the first to bear the name: a 410kW concept based on the 8 Series coupe lives at the BMW museum in Munich, offering a glimpse of early plans to take on Ferrari in the supercar arena.

For its part, BMW has yet to confirm plans for a new supercar, but insiders have reportedly told Automobile Magazine that the so called M8 will make its debut in 2016. The report adds that rather than develop an all new platform from the ground up, the coming i8 itself inspired by the M1 and Hommage cars will donate its carbon fibre and aluminium architecture. Don’t fear the i8’s three cylinder petrol engine and electric motor combo making the leap though, BMW is believed to be focusing on a high powered V8 drivetrain.

2013 BMW M8 Engine :
The V12 was based around two 6cyl engines from the M3 at the time and it proved to be instantly reliable in tests of the 8 series. Although the M8 and its V12 engine were fully developed and production ready having been signed off in test vehicles, the car was never signed off by BMW management, despite M’s insistence. The engine produces around 550bhp in the M8 and had “stunning performance figures”, according to M personnel. It then went on to feature in a first generation X5 with over 700bhp, a 6 spd manual box and a 300kph (186mph) top speed, but this car never saw production either.

The M8 Prototype is perhaps the best kept secret of BMW and for the first time, BMW has unveiled the on off car in front of journalists at the BMW Museum in Munich. Despite several false reports in the past, the M8 prototype has not been destroyed by BMW and it still exists in a special facility in Munich. While our complete and highly detailed story is in works, here are some quick details. The M8 was equipped with a V12 prototype engine based on the S70 engine, producing around 550 horsepower. Compared to the 850CSi, the M8 prototype was also missing the headlights. The car features dual side vents at the rear wheel.
