The kids in the third row are going to yak animal crackers while watching Shrek 6 and not because they’re disgusted by yet another sequel. Mercedes-Benz’s quintessential millionaire-mommy bus, the three-row, seven-seat GL-class has just moved into its second generation, and for the first time it will be offered as an Affalterbach-debauched GL63 AMG.
The ML63 AMG is the potent, sport focused model of Mercedes-Benz’s M-Class mid-size luxury SUV range. Though the wisdom of a high performance variant of a big, heavy and aerodynamically challenged SUV is debatable, customer demand is strong, and Mercedes has responded with the most powerful ML63 AMG to date.
Visually differentiating the ML63 AMG from its less fire breathing siblings are aggressive front and rear fascias along with new side skirts running the length of the vehicle to connect the more sporty design. The front end flows into distinctive front fenders, which are 0.4 inches wider on each side than the standard ML in order to accommodate larger AMG alloy wheels.
With the ML and GL so closely related, it’s fitting that much of what you’ll find in the ML63 AMG is carried over to the GL63. The AMG V-8 of the present age, a direct injected 5.5 liter V-8 with two turbochargers, provides the GL63 with 550 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque. This matches the higher of the two outputs available for the ML63. All-wheel drive is standard, as is a seven speed automatic transmission featuring Comfort, Sport, and Manual settings. A Controlled Efficiency program which defaults to on when in Comfort and is disabled in other modes activates an engine stop start function, deadens throttle-response, and shifts to higher gears earlier. Pointless for an AMG driver?… Yes. But not pointless as far as government regulators and CO2 measurers are concerned.
2013 Brabus Mercedes Benz ML 63 AMG Price :
Mercedes hasn’t yet announced pricing for the GL63, which goes on sale early in 2013, or the rest of the GL-class range. The ML63 stickers for $95,865 so a tag of at least $100,000 is a good bet for the GL63, and even at that price it’ll be the least-expensive seven seat, 500 plus hp SUV available in the U.S. It’ll also be the only one.
2013 Brabus Mercedes Benz ML 63 AMG Interior :
The ML63 AMG comes lavishly equipped with a navigation system a seven-inch display and rear-time traffic and weather updates, a Harmon/Kardon “Logic 7″ surround sound system with Bluetooth audio streaming, HD radio and a USB port, a sunroof, PARKTRONIC with Active Parking Assist and heated and active ventilated front seats with 10-way power adjustability.
The first driving program can be accessed by setting the vehicle to the”Controlled Efficiency” mode, aka eco mode, which sets the engine’s start stop to active, delivers more comfort oriented shifts and makes earlier gear changes to stay in the “green spot,” which is not to be confused with the sweet spot in the power band that maximizes power. This mode is so aggressively non aggressive, in fact, the ML63 will typically launch in second gear while in Controlled Efficiency mode bypassing the gas-hungry first gear altogether.
Next up are Sport and Manual modes, both of which fully disable the start stop engine function, and instead put the engine in a “let’s do this” mindset. Where Sport Mode will shorten shift points and still work as a normal automatic transmission, Manual Mode will leave gear change duties in the hand of driver input.
2013 Brabus Mercedes Benz ML 63 AMG Exterior :
The brakes of course are only part of the stopping equation as the wheels and tires cannot be forgotten. The ML63 AMG features five spoke, 20 inch alloy wheels which are coated in a titanium grey high gloss finished, wrapped in 265/45/R20 tires on all four corners.
Few cosmetic changes have been made in building the GL63 from a non AMG GL. The fenders are flared a bit for the AMG version, and the lower part of the front fascia is different from that of a standard GL although it looks nearly identical to some of the Euro spec GLs equipped with the optional body kit. “V8 BITURBO” badges adorn the front fenders, and 21 inch wheels are standard. At the back, the GL63 features chrome tipped quad exhaust finishers. Interior changes are equally limited, with AMG sport seats in the front and some unique stitching around the dash and doors, as well as special trim. Virtually all of the safety and convenience features you’d expect from a Benz replete with funny names like Adaptive Coffee Consumption Assist are standard on the GL63.
