2013 Fiat 500 Abarth Review | Price | Exterior | Interior – Now, Mini mustn’t maintain its monopoly on the multiplication of microcars at least that seems to be Fiat’s take. While the 2012 Cinquecento is weeks away from its launch in the U.S. and the semi-convertible 500C will arrive a few months later, the Italian car giant has even more planned for its diminutive hatchback. A long-wheelbase version, probably with four doors (rather than the Mini Clubman’s awkward 2.5-door setup), is in development, and, based on the spy photos seen here, it appears that Fiat also is working on an all-wheel-drive version of the 500. It likely will hit the market in mid-to-late 2012 as a 2013 model.
The visual differences between the car shown in these spy photos and a normal, front wheel drive 500 aren’t numerous, but they are significant. This test mule rides much higher than a typical 500, which has only 4.1 inches of ground clearance in U.S. spec. A differently shaped muffler can be seen placed higher and in a different location than the one on front-drive 500s, presumably to accommodate AWD bits. The vertical gray tape at the trailing edge of the front fenders looks to be covering vertical vents or slats, a feature that might be specific to the future all-wheel-drive 500 or which could be bound for the 500’s face lift, expected around the same time as this new model.
The modest output of the normal 500’s 1.4 liter four cylinder (101 horsepower, 98 lb ft of torque) is now a stout 160 horsepower and 170 lb-ft of torque thanks to a turbocharger. Sixty mph is achieved from a standstill in under seven seconds. To help drivers learn how to make the most of the car, the price of admission includes a track day at the the Abarth Driving Experience. The day-long track event is conducted by instructors from the Richard Petty Driving Experience. Those who enjoy the style of the Fiat 500 but want increased power and more precise handling should look no further than the Abarth model. Along with a tuned suspension, upgraded brakes and a more aggressive look, this diminutive hot hatch boasts a turbocharged motor with nearly 60 percent more horsepower than the standard 500.
“In the EU we have no rear crash standard as you do in the U.S.,” says Fabio DiMuro, Chief Engineer on the 500. “To meet U.S. standards, we moved the fuel filler assembly farther forward and changed the rear floor pan. We expect full five-star ratings.” DiMuro, who helped launch the European 500 in 2007, explained that EU-500s have the spare tire mounted inside the trunk in a well. The U.S.-spec 500 has a reinforced rear cargo area floor with no well. The spare tire is mounted under the car. Regarding the chassis, the NAFTA 500’s rear axle is a stouter design. This change allowed the Fiat/Chrysler development team to soften the 500’s spring rates and damper settings to improve the little car’s ride. The performance improvement is so substantial that EU 500s will soon use the new rear axle design.
