2013 Infiniti Q30 Concept

Infiniti has released the first image of its Q30 concept, a premium-compact-previewing show car set to debut in Frankfurt next month. Nissan’s luxury division is in the midst of a major re-branding effort focused on elevating its image to the level enjoyed by German luxury competitors such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi, and upscale small cars are those companies’ next big frontier. Thus, the Q30 directly foreshadows an upcoming Infiniti offering designed to take on the Mercedes-Benz CLA-class sedan (and A-class hatch in Europe) and Audi A3. Infiniti has yet to reveal all of the Q30’s details, but here’s a rundown of what we already know about the compact.

The curtain has officially been raised on the Infiniti Q30 Concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show, an oft-teased five-door hatchback that will move the neo-luxury brand downmarket to compete with the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class. Not only is Infiniti moving down market, it’s targeting a younger audience, a field that it hasn’t traditionally played in, that wants something different than a hum-drum luxury car. According to Infiniti’s marketing director, Hugues Fabre, “Younger customers are coming into the premium segment with their own attitude toward premium-ness.”

Infiniti’s trademark styling elements are on full display here, from the radically kinked C-pillar and Q50-inspired headlights and grille, to the dramatic character lines on the profile. In the cabin, it looks like an extraterrestrial disco, with a lot of violet lighting, bronzed touchpoints and creamy leather. Ignore the concept car tinsel, though, and you’ll see that Infiniti is dead serious when it says the Q30 foreshadows a production model.

Proportionally, little room is left for doubt as to which wheels are driven the Q30 largely looks like an Infiniti-ized Mazda 3 five-door. But working in more tangible terms, Infiniti parent conglomerate Nissan/Renault recently announced a technology partnership with Daimler, parent company to Mercedes-Benz. The front-drive-based Mercedes A-class architecture was part of Daimler’s dowry, and Infiniti subsequently revealed it was calling dibs. The A-class which isn’t sold in the U.S. also serves as the basis for the CLA-class sedan (which is sold here), and that car offers optional all-wheel drive; given the Q30’s taller stance, we wouldn’t be surprised if the production model also offered four driven wheels.

Designers achieved this through pursuing greater artistic freedom to create highly sculptural shapes, featuring a unique execution of Infiniti’s “dual wave” effect and pursuing the notion of dissymmetry.

Dissymmetry, an unconventional approach, orients design features from air vents and armrests to the instrument clusters – for more sculpted visual appeal. The technique creates an interior design for Q30 Concept markedly in contrast to any found in premium car products from traditional market leaders.

The shape of the Infiniti Q30 Concept deliberately challenges categorisation – not a coupe, not a hatch and not a crossover – to appeal to younger customers who are less likely to follow tradition and actually desire to disrupt convention to create their own unique experiences.

The design concept reflects that, by the end of this decade, Gen X and Gen Y will represent 80 per cent of buyers in the premium segment, bringing new, more contemporary expectations for premiumness.

Infiniti is confident its concept’s fusion of the dynamic design and sportiness of a coupe, the roominess of a hatch and the higher stance of a crossover will resonate with these customers. Q30 Concept is immediately differentiated from traditional mass-market premium vehicles.

The Infiniti Q30 Concept design language creates a unique place for Infiniti, reflecting the brand’s intent to deliver outstanding product substance in terms of design, materials, fit and finish, craftsmanship and performance.

Bold sections and intersecting lines of its body side play with light and shadow. Its muscular body surfaces evoke lithe and graceful cats, such as the cheetah’s movements of floating grace.

Infiniti designers, led by Executive Design Director Alfonso Albaisa, took a disciplined artistic approach to sculpt the vehicle as would metal craftsmen in a classical Italian carrozzerie. Yet the designers were inspired by the use of lightweight composites and carbon fibre to create an air of lightness and effortless performance.

“The Q30 Concept doesn’t feel heavy. It’s more horizontal, floating and sculptural,” said Albaisa. “It has a strong Italian design flavor with spontaneity and fluidity, a free-sculpture feeling full of Latin playfulness and nuance. Imagine combining Italian coachwork with Japanese brushstroke.”

2013 Infiniti Q30 Powertrain

The Etherea concept was powered by Nissan’s next-generation supercharged four-cylinder/electric-motor hybrid system, but we suspect the production Q30 will get a less exotic gas-only setup. Again, looking to the Nissan/Renault Daimler partnership and the engines used by the CLA-class and A3 the Q30 probably will get a turbocharged four-cylinder. Specifically, it likely will be the same Mercedes-Benz unit Infiniti is borrowing for the lower-output Q50; we expect that mill to produce somewhere between 210–240 horsepower in this application.

2013 Infiniti Q30 Performance

The enhanced muscularity and athleticism of the Infiniti Q30 Concept – with its sleek profile and wheels-at-the-corners stance offers the visual promise of engaging performance and dynamics.

Infiniti’s forthcoming compact premium entry will be the first Infiniti model Sebastian Vettel, Infiniti’s Director of Performance, will influence from its inception.

The three-time Formula One world champion from Infiniti Red Bull Racing has engaged with Infiniti’s technical teams around the world as part of Infiniti’s commitment to infuse its brand with a performance pedigree.
