Volkswagen recently pulled the cover off an all new compact SUV concept that could find its way to the U.S. market within the next few years. Brazil’s Sao Paulo Motor Show played host to the unveiling of the small SUV concept, officially dubbed the Taigun, which would slot below the popular Tiguan in the automaker’s growing lineup.

On the outside, the Taigun shares many familiar stylistic traits with the Tiguan, including its bulging rear fenders, characteristic Volkswagen grille and clean, crisp tailgate design. New exterior styling features include rear door handles located high on the SUV’s doors behind its windows and a rising belt line below the windows that gives the Taigun a compact, sporty look. Its small appearance is no illusion: At 151 inches long, the Taigun is just six inches longer than a MINI Cooper.

We didn’t have to wait very long for recent reports of a new small Volkswagen crossover to come true… well, sort of. In a side note to our report on a seven passenger VW CUV last week, we also mentioned the possibility of a new sub Tiguan crossover, and we may have gotten our first look at such a vehicle courtesy of this Volkswagen Taigun Concept that is debuting at the São Paulo motor show.

Volkswagen has revealed its intention to join the burgeoning compact SUV ranks with the Taigun concept revealed at the Sao Paulo motor show in Brazil. The four seat Taigun previews the look and mechanical layout for a new Volkswagen model to be positioned and priced below the popular Tiguan. The new SUV will be launched toward the middle of the decade as a rival to vehicles such as the Mini Countryman, Nissan Juke and Chevrolet Trax.

The North American market is not ready for tiny cars, as fun and competent as some may be. And although this subcompact SUV looks rather cool in the middle of a desert, it would seem less convincing on U.S. roads where it would be dwarfed by full size family sedans, trucks, and SUVs. So no, the Taigun is not coming here. But we have a feeling it soon will be all over the place in Europe, Asia, and Latin America.

2013 Volkswagen Taigun Interior :
The interior of the Taigun is simple and spacious (headroom is 1,036 mm in front and 980 mm at the back), with controls pared back to a minimum. The front air nozzles, for example, not only individually control the direction of the air flow, but also the blower speed and the temperature, which is displayed within the nozzle. Meanwhile the central infotainment system can pair with the majority of smartphones, providing an intuitive interface. Above this are mounted auxiliary instrument gauges that display oil pressure, coolant temperature and turbo charge pressure.

The Taigun is small even by crossover standards, but it tries hard to be taken seriously. It is shorter than a Ford Fiesta, but taller and slightly wider. The little SUV weighs just more than a ton, and it’s equipped with 205 rubber on 17 inch tires. The Taigun displays a lot of elements that underscore the familial resemblance among larger VW models, such as the horizontal bars that extend from the grille into the headlights and the front and rear LED lighting. The rear door handles are hidden, and combined with the Up inspired kink in the side windows, it creates the effect of a two-door vehicle. Somewhat surprisingly, the Taigun does not pick up the Up’s distinct front bumper signature, which raises the question as to whether the element will survive on that car.

2013 Volkswagen Taigun Exterior :
The look of the Taigun is deliberately styled to emulate that of its SUV siblings, the Tiguan and Touareg, as is evident in the rugged side panels, underbody protection and practical roof rails with LED spotlights. Wide tracks (1,473 mm front and rear) help give the Taigun a purposeful look, while 17 inch alloys with 205/50 R17 tyres, high ground clearance and plentiful torque enable it to deal with rough surfaces. This is, however, very much a vehicle for the urban environment: the high driving position gives the driver an optimum view in traffic, while there’s plenty of room for luggage, thanks to a practical 280 litre loadspace that increases to 987 litres with the rear seats down. What’s more, the tailgate is split, with the top two thirds opening upwards and the bottom third folding down, making loading even easier.

Key among the Taigun’s design elements are a highly technical interpretation of the German carmaker’s grille treatment, LED headlamps and separate daytime running lamps, high set bumpers with contrasting aluminum look scuff plates front and rear, a heavily contoured hood, bulging wheel arches with 17 inch wheels, cladding along the wheel arches and sills, a prominent crease line running below the greenhouse, aluminum roof bars and a characteristically wide C pillar.

At 151.9 inches long, 68.0 inches wide and 61.8 inches tall, the Taigun is 22.3 inches shorter, 3.2 inches narrower and 5.1 inches lower than the Tiguan. Its 97.2 inch wheelbase and 58.0 inch track widths are also 7.1 inches shorter and 3.8 inches narrower than the Tiguan. Volkswagen claims 40.8 inches of headroom up front and 38.2 inches in the rear. Raised ride height and elevated seating provide a commanding seating position that is claimed to be at least 10 inches higher than the Up. Cargo space is put at 9.9 cubic feet 6.7 cubic feet less than the Tiguan. The cargo area expands to 34.9 cubic feet when the split fold rear seats are stowed.

2013 Volkswagen Taigun Engine :
Although the Taigun Concept suggests that VW has all but given up on imbuing its new vehicles with comprehensible names, this new softroader also looks to balance practicality and fuel economy. With a slightly smaller footprint than the current Golf, the Taigun actually has more interior space (including more front headroom), but it’s the powertrain that could really make this B segment CUV standout if it sees production. Using a small gasoline 1.0 liter direct injected and turbocharged three cylinder under the hood, the Taigun Concept still has pretty respectable small car numbers, generating 108 horsepower and 129 pound feet of torque. However, the true beauty of this engine is that VW puts its fuel economy numbers at 4.7 liters per 100 kilometers around 50 miles per gallon on the EU cycle.

Powering the four seat Taigun is a new 1.0 litre, three cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 110 PS at 5,000 rpm and pushing 175 Nm (129 lbs ft) of torque through the six speed manual gearbox. The engine is based on the latest EA211 series, and with the use of direct fuel injection and turbocharging it is able to return a combined fuel consumption of just 4.7 litres per 100km (60.1 mpg), despite being able to take the 985 kg Taigun from zero to 62 mph in 9.2 seconds and on to 186 km/h (115 mph) top speed.

We also expect a production version of the Taigun to have more power than its concept counterpart. While the concept’s 110 horsepower 1.0 liter turbocharged 3 cylinder engine might give it enough power for European or Latin American drivers in densely packed cities, the SUV will likely require more grunt if it’s destined for shoppers in the U.S. That’s emphasized by the concept SUV’s quoted 0 to 60 mph acceleration time of more than 9 seconds, which places it a second and a half behind the Tiguan 2.0T.

The Taigun uses a 1.0 liter three cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine producing 108 horsepower. It propels the Taigun to 62 mph in 9.2 seconds and has a top speed of 115 mph. Although it has the proportions, silhouette and ground clearance of an SUV in miniature, the Taigun will only be offered in front wheel drive form with a six speed manual transmission.
