Porsche’s Macan is on track for a reveal late next year and prototypes for the compact crossover are currently being wrung out on the Nürburgring to ensure its every bit as capable as one of the automaker’s sports cars. We’ve managed to scoop one of the prototypes, presented here in our exclusive spy video which confirms the high riding Porsche should have no trouble carving up a race track. Despite the prototype’s rapid pace, the minimal body roll indicates the Macan is already a very sporty and composed compact crossover.

Porsche’s entry level SUV. Did you ever think you’d see those words in the same sentence?… It’s like “McDonald’s new $62 porterhouse.” Initially, the Cajun will come as a coupe, two years after the coupe arrives, a five door will debut. A low roofline and a Porsche designed interior will differentiate the Cajun from its platform mate, the Audi Q5. Much of the cabin, including a Panamera like raised center console, will reportedly be shared with the upcoming Porsche Boxster.

When it arrives next year as a 2014 model, the Porsche Macan will be priced and sized to compete with a growing list of small, stylish and fun to drive luxury crossovers. This lucrative market segment includes the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, BMW X3, Infiniti FX and Mercedes-Benz GLK. Also amongst this formidable mix is the Audi Q5, which happens to serve as the basis for this new baby Porsche sport ute. Given the badge on its nose, the Macan will undoubtedly emphasize high performance driving and road biased handling. It remains to be seen whether Porsche will bother to add many off road features, much like Range Rover did with the surprisingly all terrain friendly Evoque.

Porsche officially confirmed the small SUV in an official statement detailing their hopes for the vehicle: “Under the working name “Cajun,” this efficient and sporty model will further expand the world’s most successful Porsche segment in the SUV sector. In addition to the new Cayenne, which has clearly consolidated its market position as the most successful sporty SUV in the premium segment, the “Cajun” will also have a very positive impact with its typical Porsche features such as light weight, ease of handling and agility. As an attractive entry model in the Porsche world, the “Cajun” will attract new and even younger customers to the premium brand along with the Boxster, the market leader in the segment of two-seater, mid-size sports cars.”

2014 Porsche Macan Interior :
The massive center stack rises at an angle like Porsche’s sedan, the Panamera. Although the base model is a four seater, a five seat option will be offered at a later date. Although the Panamera was sinfully ugly, the interior was something to behold, albeit a little confusing to use with all those buttons. We imagine that the Cajun’s interior will do without some of those sporty buttons that the Panamera had.

In an interview at the Paris auto show with industry publication Automotive News, Walter de’ Silva, VW Group’s design chief, said, “I really hope to be able to add something positive to Porsche’s new models, which will remain coherent with the great tradition of Porsche The Cajun will be the first new Porsche created under my influence.”

As for styling, an official teaser sketch, though highly stylized, reveals a similar treatment to that found on the current Cayenne, as well as headlights featuring the squared off look seen on the new 2013 Porsche Boxster. Despite the near finished look of this prototype, the Macan is still close to 18 months from production, meaning many of the details could yet change. Furthermore, while the five door model is the subject of the spy shots and video, a sportier three door variant is possible.

Porsche has confirmed that its new SUV known until now as the Cajun will in fact be called the Macan, a name derived from the Indonesian word for tiger. The name “combines suppleness, power, fascination and dynamics.” The new Macan will be the fifth model in Porsche’s line up and will be produced in Leipzig starting 2013.Next to the official name, Porsche has also unveiled a teaser video and a rendering of the next SUV.

2014 Porsche Macan Exterior :
The Cajun will be very similar to the Audi Q5 in mostly every way because after all, they are just about brothers. The Porsche will be dimensionally similar to the Q5, albeit slightly lower, shorter, and wider. What really differentiates the vehicle’s stance is the wider nineteen and twenty inch wheels, as they add the bit of bling that the Audi lacked. All exterior and interior panels will be new, but the windshield angle, the firewall, and the roof pillars have to remain as they are on the Audi. To give drivers that classic Porsche sporting feel, the Cajun receives its own sporty seats, a different steering column, and the dashboard from the upcoming Boxster.

SUVs and crossover can be confused with each other, thankfully the 2014 Macan cannot be confused with another car; it is in a class of its own!… From the roofline of its 4 door coupe version that curves down towards the lip of the boot, Macan or Cajun (if that is what you will still like to call it) is different from all we have seen.

2014 Porsche Macan Price :
Expect pricing to start somewhere around $42,000 for the base Macan when it goes on sale.

What we know for now is that the 2014 Porsche Macan is schedule for production in 2013. 2014 Porsche Macan release date in U.S. is expected to be in early 2014. Although there are speculations here and there, Porsche has not released the 2014 Porsche Macan price, we believe it will considerably be more than the $36,000 – $44,000 price of the Audi Q5.

2014 Porsche Macan Engine :
We’re still waiting for some concrete information about Porsche’s Audi Q5 based crossover, which goes into production next year, especially regarding powertrain. The obvious assumption is that the Porsche will be powered by a tweaked version of the Q5’s supercharged 3.0 liter V6. New for 2013, it makes 272 horses, though we’ve also heard rumors of an S version with a more potent powerplant like the one in the Audi S4 that is rated at 329 horsepower. Then there’s the mother of all rumors: The Macan might be had with a 370 hp, twin turbo V6.

It’s expected that the Macan will be offered with a range of new V6 engines tailored to Porsche’s needs. This will likely include a version of the 313 PS 3.0 BiTDI, and also a 380 PS petrol engine for the Macan Turbo. A base four cylinder model and a hybrid are also reportedly considered. Heavily influenced by the Cayenne, the model features a familiar front fascia with prominent air intakes and sweptback headlights. There’s also a sloping roofline, a tailgate mounted spoiler and a four tailpipe exhaust system.

Under the hood, we can expect a variety of different engines. Petrol options are slated to include a turbocharged 2.0 liter four cylinder with 220 hp (164 kW / 223 PS), a naturally aspirated 3.6 liter V6 with 295 hp (220 kW / 299 PS) and possibly a twin turbo 3.0 liter V6 with 370 hp (276 kW / 375 PS) in the Macan Turbo. On the diesel side, there could be a 2.0-liter TDI with 190 hp (142 kW / 193 PS) and a 3.0 liter V6 TDI with 250 hp (186 kW / 253 PS). There’s also would of a hybrid variant which would have a powertrain sourced from the Audi Q5 Hybrid.

The 2014 Macan will come with different engines: a hybrid 2.0 liter 4 cylinder turbo engine rated at 241 HP, a 3.0 liter twin turbo V6 engine rated at 333 350 HP, a 2.0 liter turbo 190 HP diesel engine is also being mentioned and an S variant 3.6 liter V6 engine rated at 295 HP. We also expect to see the standard 7 speed manual transmission alongside an optional automatic seven speed, twin clutch PDK transmission, a launch control and carbon ceramic disc brakes.
