2015 Cadillac Escalade Changes

The 2015 Cadillac Escalade ranks 1 out of 9 Luxury Large SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of published reviews and test drives of the Cadillac Escalade, as well as reliability and safety data.Test drivers say the redesigned Cadillac Escalade’s luxurious interior, sharp handling and supremely powerful engine are unmatched by most rivals.

In this category of traditional luxury SUVs, the Cadillac Escalade has experienced an on-again, off-again position as class leader that has historically been tied to its newness. Undergoing a full redesign, the 2015 Cadillac Escalade looks to recapture the top spot. We suspect it will, but whether the Escalade’s particular brand of mojo will still appeal to you is an entirely different matter.

On the outside, the already imposing Escalade receives even more visual impact with blockier styling and more conspicuous flourishes. (Get your Escalade in black and it could very well be reminiscent of the presidential limousine affectionately known as “The Beast.”) The interior gets a makeover as well. Here, it’s a sleeker and more modern look highlighted by Cadillac’s latest “CUE” touch-operated infotainment system. New safety features are part of the 2015 Escalade’s repertoire as well and include a new center front seat airbag and automatic braking for collision mitigation.

The 2015 Cadillac Escalade is powered by V8 engine that reviewers say is responsive, quiet at idle and delivers plenty of power to quickly get the Escalade up to highway speeds. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard. The Escalade gets up to 15/21 mpg, which is average for the class. Test drivers note that the Escalade’s ride is a bit firmer than some rivals’, but still comfortable overall. They report that the 2015 Escalade offers controlled handling, and they like its standard Magnetic Ride Control suspension system, which they note makes a noticeable difference in driving dynamics when switching between its Sport and Touring modes. Some also report that the Escalade has strong brakes, and they appreciate its well-weighted, responsive steering.

2015 Cadillac Escalade Interior

The base Escalade is generously appointed with 20-inch chrome wheels, magnetic ride control with Sport and Comfort modes, automatic LED headlights, automatic wipers, front and rear parking sensors, running boards, a hands-free power liftgate, power-folding and driver-side auto-dimming mirrors, keyless ignition and entry, remote start, tri-zone automatic climate control, a heated power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, power-adjustable pedals, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated eight-way power front seats with four-way lumbar adjustment and driver memory functions, heated rear seats and split power-folding third-row seats. Standard electronic features include the CUE touch-operated infotainment interface, a rearview camera, a customizable instrument panel, a navigation system, real-time traffic, and a Bose 16-speaker audio system with active noise cancelling, a CD player, HD and satellite radio, five USB ports and an auxiliary audio jack.

Cadillac calls the Escalade’s new lines crisp, and more sophisticated. The more firmly pressed panels are handsome, but it’s the full LED lighting that creates the most effective drama, front and rear, from the vertically stacked elements on the nose to the rear LED taillights that soar up to the roof and illuminate the Cadillac wreath-and-crest logo.

The interior’s a point of pride. Cut-and-sewn upholstery trims out the cabin, with leather and suede tucking neatly next to wood trim, including a fantastic open-pore treatment that looks especially handsome with a new brown hide. From the front seats–which are heated and cooled as standard–the centerpiece of the dashboard is Cadillac’s tablet-like CUE touchscreen system, which can be activated by voice, capacitive touch and swipe gestures. In front of the driver, a 12.3-inch display offers a cluster of digital gauges which the driver can reconfigure into one of four themes. A head-up display that projects selected information over the hood is optional.

It’s the Escalade’s interior where Cadillac has made the biggest effort to separate its flagship from lesser GM trucks, and the results are impressive. For the first time, the Escalade’s cabin says “CTS” more than it does “Yukon,” sharing none of its dash or door trim with the GMC and Chevy SUVs. The Caddy’s dashboard is dominated by a façade of button-free shiny black plastic, otherwise known as the touch-sensitive CUE system already serving in the ATS, CTS, and XTS. That panel is paired with an eight-inch touch screen and they combine to control the radio, climate control, navigation, and more. One does hold out hope that scientists are able to end the terrible global button-and-knob shortage soon.

On Luxury and Premium trim levels, Lane-Change Alert, Side Blind-Zone Alert, and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert systems are all standard. A package of driver-awareness features includes forward-collision warnings, lane-departure warnings, and a safety-alert seat system which vibrates to warn the driver of a possible accident threat on one side of the vehicle or the other. Beyond that, the Drive Assist bundle adds fully adaptive cruise control, collision preparation, automatic seat-belt tightening, and front and rear automatic braking.

As well as the head-up display for the driver, other options include a rear entertainment system that plays Blu-Ray discs on a single 9-inch screen that descends from the roof on the standard Escalade, and on two separate 9-inch screens on the longer ESV model.

In terms of cargo capacity, the Escalade is comparable to other luxury SUVs, with 15.2 cubic feet of storage behind the third row and 94.2 cubic feet available with the second and third rows stowed. The rearmost seats fold away at the touch of a trunk-mounted button in a matter of seconds. On all but the base trim, the second row flips forward with another set of adjacent switches.

Accessing the cargo area is convenient thanks to a hands-free liftgate that is actuated when you sweep your foot under the rear bumper, as long as the key is within 3 feet of the vehicle. Loading items is hampered, however, by a very high floor height that makes it difficult to load bigger, heavier items.

2015 Cadillac Escalade Engine

The 2015 Cadillac Escalade seats up to eight and has standard rear-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive is optional. The Escalade is powered by a 6.2-liter V8 engine that is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The Escalade is available in regular and long-wheelbase Escalade ESV models. There are three trims: Standard, Luxury and Premium. The Escalade is completely redesigned for the 2015 model year.

Powering the 2015 Cadillac Escalade is a 6.2-lilter V8 engine that produces 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic is the only transmission offered and drives the rear wheels. Four-wheel drive is optional.

In Edmunds testing, a four-wheel-drive Escalade accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds. That makes it one of the quicker large SUVs available. The EPA estimates a rear-wheel-drive Escalade will return 17 mpg combined (15 city/21 highway), while the four-wheel-drive model is rated at 16 mpg combined (14 city/21 highway). These figures are marginally better than the competing gasoline-powered rivals.
