Now, the 2015 Chevy Tahoe is the anti-crossover except where its savvy cabin and infotainment features are concerned with almost all the capability of a full-size pickup. The full-sized SUV has lost some of its popularity in recent years as buyers move to larger crossovers, but the truck-based capability of a true SUV for towing, hauling, and carrying cargo remains an unmatched combination for many. The new 2015 Chevy Tahoe is a ready candidate for the mixed workload of moving people and things, and it does it with an updated powertrain, a sharp new look, new technology, and improved comfort.

It’s a derivative of GM’s big pickup-truck and SUV family of vehicles, so the Tahoe’s look is familiar. The front end’s close to that of the 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500 pickup truck, but Chevy says the two vehicles don’t share any sheetmetal. Elsewhere, the Tahoe’s very crisply folded wagon body has much more in common with the 2015 Chevy Suburban its long-wheelbase companion and with the 2015 GMC Yukon.

The Tahoe might seem like a dinosaur in these fuel-conscious days, but it has almost no competition, and thus is quite the profit center for GM. Ford’s slow-selling Expedition, as well as the equally customer-proof Toyota Sequoia and Nissan Armada are its closest threats and those trucks are only considered “close threats” because they’re roughly the same size as the Tahoe. Last year, the Chevy outsold its next-best-selling competitor, the Expedition, by a margin of nearly two to one. More than five Tahoes were sold last year for every Sequoia Toyota moved, and Chevy cashiered nearly four of the SUVs for every Armada Nissan managed to get rid of. Besides its usefulness as a tool for towing and hauling, the Tahoe also happens to be a popular people shuffler for Americans who like riding tall in the saddle.

2015 Chevrolet Tahoe Interior

The new 2015 Chevy Tahoe is the first example of the model that doesn’t share any of its body panels with the Silverado pickup that shares much of its mechanical bits. This freedom of design has allowed Chevrolet to re-work proportions and details to better reflect modern SUV styling.

Underpinning the crisp exterior lines is a focus on aerodynamics, to help boost gas mileage. But despite the engineered shapes, the overall look still says classic SUV, while draping the bulky form in graceful angles and sharp details.

Step inside the Tahoe, and you’re greeted by an all-new interior that’s less trucky than before. The dashboard is far less upright than the Silverado’s (until the most recent-generation Tahoe, the dashboards in both were similar), and features lots of soft contours, stitched leather and vinyl, and flashes of metallic-looking trim. The doors are now inlaid into the bodysides and should result in a quieter interior at speed the design element was employed on the new Silverado, to good effect. Chevrolet’s latest MyLink infotainment setup, paired with an eight-inch touch screen, is available, as are up to six USB ports and six power outlets (including one 110-volt household-spec outlet) and keyless entry with pushbutton starting. The Tahoe features fold-flat second- and third-row seats, along with an available power-folding feature, for generous cargo space.

Among the features available in the new Tahoe are a new eight-inch color touchscreen for the audio/navigation/information system, which includes MyLink connectivity. Up to six USB ports and six power outlets, including a 110-volt grounded outlet help ensure everyone’s devices stay charged. A rear-seat entertainment system offers Blu-ray DVD capability, and a “conversation mirror” in the overhead console gives a panoramic view of the rear seats to help parents keep an eye on children. Keyless entry and pushbutton start are also available.

2015 Chevrolet Tahoe Exterior

The look of the new 2015 Tahoe is even more thoroughly revised, with many of the details shared with the pickups, but worked into a form that presents a substantial, durable sensation while also merging more car-like aspects to the control layout and overall shape.

Aesthetically, the new interior is head and shoulders above the previous-generation Tahoe, bringing a markedly premium feel through more modern shapes and themes, improved materials, and rich color palettes.

2015 Chevrolet Tahoe Engine

The new V-8 engine undergoes improvements in several areas, including power, efficiency, and quietness. The power upgrades boost output to 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, while at the same time, the efficiency upgrades eke more mileage out of each gallon of gasoline.

Direct injection and cylinder deactivation are at the top of the efficiency upgrades sheet. While direct injection allows more precise and more efficient use of fuel, it does its job behind the scenes. The star of the new V-8’s efficiency cast is the cylinder deactivation mode, which allows the engine to turn off half of its cylinders under low-load conditions, effectively turning the 5.3-liter V-8 into a 2.65-liter V-4. That can yield remarkable gains in steady-state gas mileage, and the process is completely transparent to the user; there is no vibration or clunking to indicate the switch, just a little “V4″ or “V8″ indicator in the gauge cluster LCD display.

Last year the Tahoe dropped its hybrid edition. For the major model change, it fits just a single drivetrain, GM’s latest 5.3-liter V-8 coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. It’s rated at 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, in both rear-drive and four-wheel-drive form.  GM claims the Tahoe will be best in its class largely due to direct injection and cylinder deactivation. We find it to be remarkable, however it stacks up against the competition. The new Tahoe’s manners on the road are impeccable, from the strong new V-8 engine to the smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission. The cabin is also much quieter than the previous Tahoe’s, matching nicely with the more comfortable seating and more stylish look. The Tahoe can tow up to 8,500 pounds when properly configured, too.
