The 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe ranks 1 out of 6 Affordable Large SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of published reviews and test drives of the Chevrolet Tahoe, as well as reliability and safety data.

The full-sized SUV has lost some of its popularity in recent years as buyers move to larger crossovers, but the truck-based capability of a true SUV for towing, hauling, and carrying cargo remains an unmatched combination for many. The new 2015 Chevy Tahoe is a ready candidate for the mixed workload of moving people and things, and it does it with an updated powertrain, a sharp new look, new technology, and improved comfort.

The fully redesigned 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe is powered by a V8 engine that impresses reviewers with its strong acceleration and smooth power delivery, who add that it has plenty of power for highway cruising and passing. At an EPA-estimated 16/23 mpg city/highway, the Tahoe has one of the highest fuel economy ratings in the class. According to automotive writers, the Tahoe offers a cushioned ride over road imperfections and decent handling for a large SUV. They are also impressed with its precise steering and easy maneuverability for its size.

2015 Chevrolet Tahoe Interior

Reviewers report that the 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe’s handsome interior styling and high-end materials give it a very luxurious feel. They note that its interior is quiet and say all seats, except its third row, are roomy and comfortable. Standard features include a rearview camera, remote start, fold-flat second- and third-row seats, Bluetooth, satellite radio, HD Radio and a six-speaker stereo. Lane departure warning, a rear-seat entertainment system with a Blu-Ray DVD player and Chevrolet’s MyLink infotainment system with an 8-inch touch screen and up to six USB ports are available. New for 2015, the Chevrolet Tahoe can now be equipped with power-folding second- and third-row seats. Test drivers report that the Tahoe’s dashboard gauges are legible and its controls are easy to use, but some critics say that MyLink sometimes operates a bit sluggishly.

Automotive writers are impressed with the 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe’s updated cabin, which they say is quiet, luxurious and outfitted with top-notch materials. They add that the Tahoe has one of the nicest interiors in the class. Reviewers also like its straightforward controls. The Tahoe doesn’t have as much cargo space as some competitors, and reviewers note that its third row is not large enough for adults to be comfortable.

2015 Chevrolet Tahoe Exterior

The 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe (and longer Suburban) is all-new this year. Although the 2015 Tahoe keeps its body-on-frame construction, the full-size three-row SUV shares less with the Chevrolet Silverado pickup than ever before. In fact, the automaker claims that no exterior sheetmetal or lighting element is shared between the Tahoe and Silverado. In our 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe First Look, we said, “Though the 2015 Tahoe and Suburban have an in-your-face split chrome grille like the Silverado (standard on all models), the latest take on Chevy’s stacked headlight treatment couldn’t be any more different, with an almost Ford Explorer/Range Rover-like look to it. Projector-beam headlights come standard on the new Tahoe and Suburban, with HIDs with LED running lights standard on the loaded Tahoe and Suburban LTZ. The previous-generation Tahoe and Suburban’s roundish jelly bean-like profile is gone, in its place is handsome, slab-sided, and chiseled sheetmetal, lending the Chevys a truck-ish quality.”

Of course, if you don’t really need the 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe’s considerable towing capabilities, you might find that a more space-efficient crossover SUV is a better fit. Although not as heavy-duty as the Tahoe, many large crossovers offer equal or greater people and cargo-hauling abilities without the trucklike driving dynamics. One of the species’ best is in Chevy’s own showroom: the eight-passenger Chevrolet Traverse, which offers substantially more cargo capacity. Options in the full-size traditional SUV realm include the Toyota Sequoia, which offers a very similar blend of functionality, performance and refinement, and the 2015 Ford Expedition, which receives a mild makeover this year. If you’re set on buying a large, traditional SUV, though, the all-new Chevy Tahoe toes the line for a do-anything utility vehicle that won’t sell you short on everyday comfort.

Aerodynamically, the new Tahoe improves on the outgoing model, despite sheetmetal that’s lost almost all the softness introduced with the last-generation Tahoe, back in 2007. The cabin is the relief from all the hard, straight edges that define the new Tahoe: the cockpit, if you can call it that on an eight-passenger vehicle, is soothingly smooth and curved, with an 8.0-inch LCD touchscreen centerpiece and more overt car influences than ever.

Other available features include keyless entry, pushbutton start; an 8.0-inch LCD touchscreen radio with Chevy MyLink connectivity, a head-up display, a power tailgate, a cargo-management system, and up to six USB ports and six power outlets. A Blu-Ray DVD entertainment system will also be an option on the Tahoe, as will wheels sized up to 22 inches.

The base Tahoe LS comes standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, heated power-adjustable manual-folding mirrors, automatic wipers, a tilt-only steering wheel, tri-zone automatic climate control, power front seats (eight-way driver seat and four-way passenger seat, both with power lumbar), a 60/40 split-fold second-row bench seat and 50/50-split fold-flat third-row seat. Also standard are remote engine start, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, a 4.2-inch color display, a rearview camera, OnStar and a six-speaker sound system with HD and satellite radio, a CD player, an auxiliary audio jack, two USB ports and an SD card slot.

Acceleration to 60 mph takes 7.1 seconds, and the quarter passes in 15.6 at 91 mph. That’s plenty of poke to easily merge onto a freeway. Tahoe buyers who like to haul will probably gloss over our acceleration figures, wanting to know the Tahoe’s towing capacities. Four-wheel-drive versions can hitch up to 8400 pounds; two-wheel drive, 8600 pounds. What those looking to tow shouldn’t ignore are the Tahoe’s strong, fade-free brakes. Stops from 70 mph took 176 feet, a number that would be respectable for a family sedan. Fuel economy comes in at 16 mpg city and 22 highway for a four-wheel-drive edition like the one here; we recorded 15 mpg over 329 miles of driving.

2015 Chevrolet Tahoe Engine

The 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe earns reviewer praise for its composed handling, accurate steering and comfortable ride. Test drivers add that the Tahoe offers brisk acceleration and say its transmission is smooth and makes the most of the Tahoe’s available power. Others like that for a vehicle of its size, driving the Tahoe is an effortless ordeal.

All 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe models come with a 5.3-liter V8 engine that generates 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission transmits power through the rear wheels on 2WD models or all four wheels on 4WD models. The 4WD Tahoe is offered with a two-speed transfer case with low-range gearing. A locking rear differential is standard on the LT and LTZ and optional for the Tahoe LS.

Last year the Tahoe dropped its hybrid edition. For the major model change, it fits just a single drivetrain, GM’s latest 5.3-liter V-8 coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. It’s rated at 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, in both rear-drive and four-wheel-drive form.  GM claims the Tahoe will be best in its class–largely due to direct injection and cylinder deactivation. We find it to be remarkable, however it stacks up against the competition. The new Tahoe’s manners on the road are impeccable, from the strong new V-8 engine to the smooth-shifting six-speed automatic transmission. The cabin is also much quieter than the previous Tahoe’s, matching nicely with the more comfortable seating and more stylish look. The Tahoe can tow up to 8,500 pounds when properly configured, too.

The 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe is powered by a 355-horsepower, 5.3-liter V8 engine. A six-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard. Four-wheel drive is available. According to the EPA, the Tahoe achieves 16/23 mpg city/highway with two-wheel drive, which is fairly good for the class. Chevrolet says the Tahoe can tow up to 8,300 pounds.
