The second generation Isuzu Rodeo midsize SUV arrived in 1998 with the same basic shape of its successful predecessor. The spare tire was now attached directly to the hatch (rather than a separate swinging tire carrier), or it could be mounted under the truck for a cleaner tail end design. These two configurations also reduced weight, which was a key design goal for Isuzu’s engineers. In total, 285 pounds were shaved off the Rodeo by reducing frame and engine weight, by switching to rack and pinion steering and by using a five link rear suspension design.

The recall covers 1998-2001 Isuzu Amigos and Rodeo Sports originally sold or currently registered in the cold weather states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Washington, D.C., West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri and Kentucky. The trucks are being recalled because rear suspension parts may detach from the frame on vehicles that have developed excessive corrosion, which of course, could lead to a crash. Four door Isuzu Rodeos and their Honda Passport twins are not part of this recall campaign, but were covered by a different recall in 2010.
Isuzu Rodeo Price :
Do not buy a new car at the full MSRP price. There are often many incentives offered by either the manufacturer or the dealer that could save you thousands of dollars. There are two types of incentives. The first is a rebate, which is an amount taken directly off the MSRP. The second is a special APR financing rate. Now here’s the kicker, If your Amigo or Rodeo Sport is so rusty that Isuzu can’t fix the area with an anti corrosive compound or a reinforcement bracket, they’ll buy your vehicle back. The price is based on the Kelley Blue Book “Private Party” value, which would range from $3,000-$5,500 if the vehicle was in good shape. We assume, however, that vehicles with such large amounts of rust that they can’t be repaired aren’t going to fetch nearly that much. A 1999 Amigo with 130,000 miles in “Fair” condition, for instance, is only worth $1,951, according to KBB. The Rodeo is a decent blend of old fashioned truck toughness and modern-day car-like convenience. But if you’re looking for a new $30,000 SUV, consider the wide range of choices before settling on the Isuzu.
Isuzu Rodeo Interior :
The base S model with the four cylinder engine was essentially a stripper (though antilock brakes were standard) with only a few options like air conditioning available. Standard and optional equipment on upper trim levels included alloy wheels, a limited slip differential, full power accessories, cruise control, tilt steering wheel, keyless entry, moonroof, leather upholstery and a six speaker stereo with cassette or CD player.
The Rodeo’s interior provides cupholders, excellent ergonomics, and plastic trim/switchgear that looks and feels somewhat cheap. Clamber aboard and head for the hills; it’s easy to thwart nature’s obstacles with push button 4WD and standard antilock brakes, though the Rodeo’s trick suspension may not be 100 percent up to the task. Buyers can select the new Ironman LS package, which includes V6, air conditioning, power moonroof, alloy wheels and Intelligent Suspension Control, which automatically adjusts to one of 17 shock rebound and compression rates, depending on road conditions.
Isuzu Rodeo Exterior :
the Isuzu Rodeo received more than 200 changes, including an aggressive styling refresh, updated seating and an optional Intelligent Suspension Control (ISC) system that automatically selected one of 17 shock rebound and compression rates depending on road conditions. A new Ironman LS package included sunroof, alloy wheels, ISC, special decals and a Best of Black Sabbath album (wait, that’s a different Ironman). A transferable 10 year/120,000 mile powertrain warranty also became standard in 2000 and a two door Rodeo Sport model was sold from 2001 to 2003.
At the top of the complaint list about the truck is the ridiculous location of the push-button 4WD switch, located directly next to the cruise control button, where it could be activated accidentally. Off road, the new Isuzu feels somewhat undersprung, but takes bumps and dips easily if speeds are kept to a minimum. Front bucket seats, formerly quite comfortable, are improved this year, according to Isuzu, and rear seat riders enjoy a supportive bench seat and plenty of legroom. For 2000, Isuzu also added a transferable 10 year/120,000 mile powertrain warranty for all of its SUVs, making it the longest one of its kind offered by any automaker in the United States.
Isuzu Rodeo Engine :
This reduced the burden on the four and six cylinder engines, which despite going up in power, were hardly known for providing quick acceleration. The standard 2.2 liter inline 4 engine available on the base S model made an anemic 129 horsepower and 144 pound feet of torque, and could only be coupled to a five speed manual. The 3.2 liter V6 available on the S and standard on the LS and LSE produced 205 hp and 214 lb ft and was mated to either the manual or a four speed automatic. Rear wheel drive was standard with four wheel drive being optional on all trim levels, but only with the V6.
Isuzu has dropped its four cylinder engine, so all Rodeo models are now equipped with a standard 3.2 liter V-6 that produces 205 hp. The newly optional 3.5 liter direct injection V-6 engine produces 250 hp and 247 pounds feet of torque. Rear drive and four wheel drive models are offered. All versions are available with either a four speed automatic or five speed manual transmission.
