Lexus F Sport | Review, Price, Interior, Exterior, Engine – The Lexus F marque represents the high performance division of cars produced by Lexus. The F marque refers to Flagship and Fuji Speedway, the chief test site of Lexus performance vehicle development in Oyama, Sunt? District, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. The first vehicle in the Lexus F marque lineup, the Lexus IS F, was announced in 2006, followed by an F marque coupe concept, the Lexus LF-A, in 2007, and the production LFA supercar in 2009. All Lexus F performance vehicles are denoted by namesake badging on the front fenders. A related performance trim line, Lexus F Sport, was launched for 2007, with an F Sport accessory line and factory models in 2010. Lexus F models have been developed by the Lexus Vehicle Performance Development Division, which has also been involved with the brand’s racing activities. The “F” designation was originally used at Lexus’ launch in 1989, as an internal code for the development of its first flagship vehicle.
Announced in 2007 at the Specialty Equipment Market Association show, the Lexus F Sport performance line for standard Lexus models debuted that year along with the IS F sports sedan. Initially offered as a lineup of performance accessories for the IS 250 and IS 350 sedans, in early 2009 F Sport expanded to the two door IS C models, along with the entire GS line. Special edition factory built F Sport IS 350 C models were announced in 2009, followed by factory produced IS 250 F Sport and IS 350 F Sport models for 2011.
Factory produced F Sport models feature interior and exterior upgrades, and can be differentiated visually by the F Sport badging, mesh grille, and spoiler. F Sport parts are produced in conjunction with Toyota Racing Development and included performance enhancements such as brake upgrades, stabilizer bars, lowering springs, Bilstein shocks, F Sport clutch, carbon fiber engine covers, and chassis braces. Personalization parts included rear spoilers, exhaust kits, and alloy wheels.
One thing that few, if any, people have called Lexus’ popular RX suv is “sporty.” With the 2013 Lexus RX F Sport, unveiled today at the 2012 New York auto show, Toyota hopes its luxury brand’s best seller can at least partially shed that bland image.
“This is NOT just an appearance package,” said Mark Templin, Group Vice President and General Manager, Lexus Division, Toyota Motor Sales at the auto show, referring to the F Sport package. “It’s a full fledged performance package that has F-Sport suspension tuning, an eight speed automatic transmission and paddle shifters… making it faster from 0 to 60 than the base RX and it has better fuel economy.”

The rear wheel drive GS350’s base price does not rise from its 2011 level at $47,775; all wheel drive models start at $50,325, an increase of $600 over the previous model. A rear wheel drive GS350 equipped like our tester should sticker at $60,180. Major options included the F Sport package ($5690); dynamic rear steering ($1700); navigation with the 12.3-inch display ($1735); Mark Levinson audio ($1380); and the Premium package (rain-sensing wipers, heated-and-ventilated front seats, and a power rear sunshade, $1400).
At $59,945, the all wheel drive GS was not much cheaper. Its major options included all the above, except for the F Sport stuff and unavailable rear-wheel steering, and added the pre collision system and dynamic radar cruise control ($2000); a head-up display ($900); 18-inch wheels ($865); lane keep assist ($500); and the Cold Weather package (a heated steering wheel, headlamp washers, a wiper deicer, and water-repellent front door glass, $340). Although neither model is inexpensive, the GS can be considered a respectable luxury car value within its competitive set, particularly compared with the German entries.

Lexus F Sport Interior. – Cosmetic updates include a massaged grille for more aggressive look, new front bumper with mesh design and fog lamps, and F Sport exterior badges. Perforated black leather seats have white perforation holes and white stitching adorns the seats, center console, and armrests. Ebony Bird’s Eye Maple trim is exclusive to the F Sport. An “F” logo on the steering wheel and aluminum pedals round out the interior changes.

Lexus F Sport Exterior. – It’s little wonder that the V-8 was killed off. The rear wheel drive GS350 F Sport offers nearly identical performance and superior fuel economy 19 mpg city and 28 highway versus 17/24 for the 2011 GS460. The all wheel drive GS350 manages EPA ratings of 19/26 mpg, both of which are 1 mpg ahead of its 2011 predecessor’s. Our lead feet and preference for running in sport-plus mode resulted in overall mileage of 19 mpg in both vehicles.
What the numbers don’t convey is the V-6’s newfound willingness to play. This is not attributable to the modest output increase but rather to the improved six-speed automatic’s quicker shifts, standard paddle shifters, and pleasant throttle blips during downshifts. Mix in a sharply tuned V-6 soundtrack that prompts more frequent and longer stabs of the throttle, and you’ll find character that no GS and perhaps no Lexus besides the $380,000 LFA supercar has exhibited before.

Lexus F Sport Engine. – The new eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters backs the 270-hp 3.5-liter V-6, Lexus says the new transmission has quicker shift responses. Lexus’ Active Torque Control all-wheel-drive system uses an electronically controlled coupling ahead of the rear differential to vary front-to-rear torque distribution. During heavy acceleration or low traction driving, as much as 50 percent of the power can be sent to the rear wheels.
The automaker expects the 2013 Lexus RX 350 F Sport to earn EPA ratings of 19/25 mpg city/highway. That’s up 1 mpg city/highway compared to a 2012 Lexus RX 350 with all-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission.
F Sport suspension upgrades include firmer shocks and springs for a lower ride height and a new lateral performance damper system. The new hardware may enhance the driving experience by reducing body vibrations, increasing steering feel, and improving ride quality. The 2013 Lexus RX 350 F Sport rides on exclusive 19-inch split five-spoke wheels wrapped in 235/55 tires.
All GS350s feature the same 3.5-liter V-6 rated at 306 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque (up by 3 ponies and 3 lb-ft from 2011) and a drive mode selector that alters throttle and transmission characteristics via eco, normal, and sport settings. Both of these test vehicles included the optional Lexus Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management system, which adds a sport-plus mode to the dial; adding to sport, it selects a more aggressive setup for the adaptive suspension, adjusts the steering system, and changes stability-control thresholds.
