The SL55 AMG was updated for 2007 with a 510 hp (380 kW)/531 ft·lbf (720 N·m) version of the same engine. The new model has only slight visual differentiators, the most noticeable is the three slat grille rather than the four-slat version used previously. It should be 0.2 seconds quicker to 100 km/h. Although the top speed remains limited to 250 km/h (155 mph), Mercedes Benz will now allow the governor to be eliminated, increasing maximum speed to 300 km/h (186 mph).

Hence the origin of silver as the German color for racing. But that’s not the point. Neubauer’s motive had nothing to do with aesthetics. In those days, the competition weight regs specified a maximum limit, rather than a minimum. Neubauer’s paint trick was designed to get the cars down below the max. The rulemakers set an upper limit, because they saw weight as a dynamic asset. A bigger car would have a bigger engine, and thus go faster. The objective was to slow the cars down.

This story came to mind early in our first lap of Wisconsin’s Road America racetrack in the new Mercedes SL55 AMG roadster. The Neubauer parable flickered in my mind’s eye like a prewar movie as I hit the rumble strips on the exit of Turn Five and started up the hill. Wow. Was ist los?…

The fifth generation SL was in production between 2002 and 2011. The all new SL (initially just a 5.0 L SL500 version) featured a retractable hardtop (marketed as the Vario Roof) available on the SLK since 1997. This featured a 5.0 L 302 hp (225 kW) V8, with a 5.4 L AMG Supercharged V8 appearing in 2002’s SL55 AMG. V12 engines are available in the SL600 and the limited-production SL65 AMG and the SL350 3.7 L (3724 cc) 18-valve V6 245 hp in some markets SL350.

The R230 SL underwent a significant facelift in 2009 featuring new and revised engines and a new front end that evokes the classic 300SL with a large grille featuring a prominent 3-pointed star and twin “power domes” on the hood, the car also features new headlights with an optional “Intelligent Light System” and a new speed sensitive steering system. The SL 63 AMG replaced the SL 55 AMG.

Mercedes seem to have created the perfect car. Superb(ish) quality, gorgeous looks, supercar performance and at the touch of a button it becomes a convertible!… The V8 engine from the SL500 has been heavily modified by AMG resulting in a near 50% increase in power. This is enough to propel the SL55 to over 200mph with speed restrictor removed.

Braking is excellent thanks to 8-pot vented discs and ESP brake by wire technology, while the SL55 becomes the first Mercedes to feature pushbutton sequential gear shift. Handling is assisted by state of the art active body control, however it still struggles to cope with the car’s enormous 2 ton mass.

Mercedes SL55 AMG Interior and Exterior :
This little tableau, reinforced by other examples of mass exerting its relentless influence, emerged as the overriding impression of an all too brief Road America experience, laid on by Mercedes Benz as the finale of its North American SL55 AMG press launch. Given the car’s capabilities, it was certainly the right venue long straights punctuated by hard braking and generally uncomplicated turns. No esses, no tricky transitions. Moreover, Mercedes had enlisted a platoon of pro road racers to demonstrate those capabilities as dramatically as possible.

Mercedes SL55 AMG Engine :
Check the motivational specs: 493 horsepower at 6100 rpm, 516 pound feet of torque manifesting itself along a wonderfully flat curve from 2650 to 4500 rpm. It’s the most potent Benz ever offered in North America, according to the manufacturer, and also the quickest factory Benz we’ve ever tested: 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds, 0 to 100 in 10.9, the quarter mile in 13 seconds flat at 110 mph.

Which brings us to this car’s all around dynamics. Mercedes refers to its “catlike handling reflexes,” which is true if you envision a cat the size of a Siberian tiger. The key to the SL55’s level cornering attitudes is the corporate Active Body Control electro-mechano-hydraulic almost-active suspension, recalibrated in this application for firmer responses without compromising ride quality. Although this sophisticated system can’t erase weight it’s always there, always tangible it manages that weight amazingly well, whether the car is clawing the pavement in a fast sweeper or unkinking a set of switchbacks. This kind of activity is abetted by the SL55’s speed sensitive rack and pinion steering, which seems to deliver a little more tactile information than the SL500’s system, and by the availability of all that torque for blasting off corners.

In contrast, the SL500 tested in our April issue hit 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, 100 in 14.5, and covered the quarter in 14.3 seconds at 99 mph. The disparities seem minor on paper, but the real world distinctions are dramatic. Crack the throttle, and this posh heavyweight lunges forward like a shark that’s been invited to nibble a chunk of Britney Spears. It dissects traffic like a superbike and exudes a sense of mechanical resentment when a soulless microchip arrests the rush at 156 mph.
