Geneva has been quite a show for big, handsome wagons, from the stonking Mercedes Benz C63 AMG to the shapely Saab 9-5 Sportcombi, there’s been a kinschlepper for every taste and budget. Adding to the variety is Hyundai’s new i40 estate, and it, too, is a looker. Boasting the same sharply rising character line as the Sonata sedan upon which it’s based, the i40 nevertheless has a more traditional nose, with a smaller grille and headlamps that look more like those from the Sonata Hybrid. Overall, the front aesthetic lurks somewhere between the Elantra and an embiggened Veloster, but either way, it’s all Hyundai and it’s an attractive piece.

Hyundai has unveiled the latest version of the D segment i40 at the 2011 Barcelona Motor Show. The debut of the Hyundai i40 sedan follows the global reveal of the i40 wagon at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011. The Hyundai i40 sedan boasts a purely European identity having been designed and engineered at the European R&D headquarters of Hyundai in Rüsselsheim, Germany. The car is the latest model to be unveiled under the company’s new brand slogan ‘New Thinking. New Possibilities.’

The 4.74 metre long Hyundai i40 sedan will go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2011, supported by Hyundai’s industry best, fully transparent Five Year Triple Care customer assurance. This package has been attracting European consumers to the brand through its combination of a five-year unlimited warranty, five years of roadside assistance and five years of vehicle health checks.

2012 Hyundai i40 Interior :
The cabin styling is immediately identifiable as belonging to Hyundai there’s the brand’s button heavy steering wheel, swoopy centre stack design and blue back lit LCD panel. The execution though is a cut above any in the range. Soft touch plastics are everywhere, panel gaps are tight and the switchgear feels like it could belong in something European. The i40 in fact was styled at Hyundai’s design centre in Russelheim, Germany; it’s no surprise to see European levels of quality and refinement in the i40’s interior.

Only the base Active and flagship Premium grades were available at the launch, with the mid level Elite in low supply for the short term. The Active’s cloth upholstery seems hard wearing, but the Premium stands out not only for its nicely trimmed leather seats, but also its impressive list of standard equipment.

2012 Hyundai i40 Exterior :
The i40 range carries a 5 star ANCAP rating with standard features including; nine airbags, Anti Lock Braking System (ABS) incorporating EBD and BAS, Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), Emergency Stop System (ESS), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), steering wheel mounted speed limiter, Electric Park Brake (EPB), and Hill-start Assist Control (HAC).

The all new i40 will be available with a choice of four Euro V compliant engines: two petrol and two diesel. These units cover a power spread of 115 ps to 177 ps, with torque delivery extended across a wide engine speed range, making the i40 an enjoyable car to drive around town or on the motorway. Manual and automatic transmissions will also be offered. In a segment where diesel models represent over 75% of total sales in Europe, Hyundai is anticipating that the 1.7 litre diesel unit developing 136 ps will be the most popular engine among both private and fleet buyers. Overall, Hyundai is expecting a 65/35% spread between diesel and gasoline powered i40 sales.

2012 Hyundai i40 Engine :
At the launch we drove the i40 Active with the 1.7 litre diesel and the i40 Premium with the 2.0 litre GDI petrol engine. Of the two, the diesel is our pick. The 2.0 litre direct injected petrol four has respectable numbers (130kW and 213Nm), but it feels strained pulling the 1600kg i40 Premium along. With the peak torque arriving at 4700rpm, the 2.0 GDI it needs lots of revs to get anywhere at a decent speed. Up hills it can feel lethargic, and isn’t helped by the six-speed auto’s reluctance to kick down.

The diesel with 100kW and 320Nm (330Nm with the manual transmission) is the better powertrain of the two. It produces its peak torque from as low as 2000rpm, resulting in more relaxed performance than the petrol and improved driveability. It’s also a better pairing for the automatic thanks to its plentiful torque. A new acoustic package was developed for Hyundai’s diesel powered i40. NVH performance, especially the exterior drive by noise, is dramatically improved by using experimental methods such as Reciprocal Holography (to visualize noise reduction levels at certain frequency) and ADNA (Advanced Diagnostic Network Algorithm) to rank noise sources in the order of their identified transfer paths.

The NVH package aims to provide a quieter and more comfortable driving environment for diesel vehicles. The new acoustic package in i40 utilizes materials such as air permeable carpet, sound absorbing layers for engine room encapsulation, and textile wheel arch liners to absorb noise sources from engine, road, and muffler, providing a 20% improvement in interior noise levels and a reduction in outside engine noise when idling (compared to an i40 without these features).
