The pretty Buick Enclave crossover ushered in a new design era at GM’s entry luxury brand, and that may be the biggest reason why after five years on the market it’s still selling strongly. But the Enclave’s crossover credentials make it a player, too. It seats up to eight passengers, lots of standard features, and it has acceptable gas mileage and predictable handling. Now, halfway through its life cycle, GM’s put some fresh touches on the Enclave, including an upgraded interior, some minor drivetrain and suspension improvements, and new infotainment and connectivity hardware, all in the quest to keep sales growing.

Consumers shopping for a domestic full size crossover have heard all about GM’s triplets. The Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave are a very appealing and talented group of siblings. Entering their fifth year of production, albeit middle age in the automotive industry, each is attractive, well rounded and very capable on the paved dance floor. While all share nearly identical base DNA and the same basic running gear, subtle physical differences and unique personalities emerge between the trio when one digs a bit deeper. The most polished of the threesome, without question, is the Enclave from Buick. Fresh off a mid cycle update (as are its siblings), the flagship of the platform boasts a facelift, innovative new features and an upgraded demeanor for the new model year.

Lighting is all the rage in new cars these days, be it ambient mood lighting inside or flourishes of light outside designed to distinguish a model or brand from far away at night. BMW’s headlight halo rings and Cadillac’s taillight spears are two perfect examples that employ LED lights (illuminating a light pipe in the BMW’s case). The declining cost of mass produced LEDs has helped make this possible, and now supplier 3M has devised a way to make LED lighting look better for less money.

Fewer changes were made to the interior, but GM spent money where it counted. A larger touch screen now adorns the center stack, bringing with it Buick’s Intellilink infotainment system as standard. Just as in other Buicks, the system is easy to use, and places Bluetooth and media controls, navigation, and other features easily within reach. The system also allows for streaming use of certain smartphone apps such as Pandora and Stitcher Radio, and comes standard with a rearview camera for 2013. As with other recent Buicks, a thin strip of Ice Blue ambient LED lighting now runs from the door panels across the dash, adding a peaceful glow to the cabin at night.

Viewed from afar, the updated 2013 Buick Enclave you see here doesn’t appear much different than its predecessors. But the difference is in the details and what a difference those details do make. Open one of this big three row crossover’s doors and you’ll be treated to the sight of an all new interior that is more than just leaps and bounds ahead of its predecessor. A dramatic new dashboard and careful selection of interior colors reveals a sense of design worthy of a genuine luxury badge. That said, the Enclave’s changes are mostly skin deep, since its powertrain and suspension carry over essentially unchanged. We hit the scenic roads around Louisville, Kentucky, to see just what the Enclave has to offer for 2013.

Our tester’s Choccachino brown and tan leather interior further enhances the crossover’s luxury feel inside, but it is let down by the faux wood trim and still dated instruments and in cluster digital display. Another feature sorely missed in the update is a hands free keyless access option, available on many other Buicks. Behind the front seats, there’s less to complain about. The second row captain’s chairs are spacious and comfortable, and the cargo area behind the third row is ample enough for at least a couple carry on bags. Folding the third row seats flat frees up a total of 67.5 cubic feet of space.

2013 Buick Enclave Price :
Our 2013 Buick Enclave, equipped with all wheel drive, navigation, 20 inch alloy wheels, sunroof, and optional White Diamond Tricoat paint, rang up at $51,690. If you’re in a climate that doesn’t require all wheel drive, you can skip that $2000 option. Forgo other frills like the $1400 sunroof and $745 tricoat finish, and you’re back in the mid to high $40,000 range.

GM’s volume Lambda is the Chevrolet Traverse, with an entry fee of $31,165 (all prices include GM’s $825 destination charge) securing a front wheel drive crossover riding on steel wheels in base trim. The GMC Acadia, better appointed and with standard alloy wheels, comes in with a base price of $35,700. The Buick Enclave, sitting clearly up front in the family portrait and wearing the nicest duds, has a base price of $39,270 for the 2013 model year.

2013 Buick Enclave Exterior :
Those who knew the Enclave last year will instantly recognize its new front fascia and bold new grille bookended by more aggressively contoured headlamps and a newly sculpted hood. More scrutiny reveals fresh black chrome accents and LED daytime running lamps up front. Gone is the two tone paint treatment, replaced with a tasteful accent of bright trim contrasting the standard monochromatic hue. The rear of the Buick has also gone under the knife, with updated styling including freshened LED taillamps and a new exhaust treatment. The Enclave, as a whole, has moved even further upscale while taking on a more strapping appearance.

The new Enclave will be immediately recognized as a Buick due to its sculpted styling design language brought out five years ago, but this design language has been updated with the addition of a more prominent grille, LED headlights and LED daytime running lights, a new hood, a modified rear bumper, and restyled 19 and 20 inch alloy wheels. The interior has been updated with higher quality materials, chrome insertions, and a new center stack.

+. Full list of exterior updates :
>. New front fascia with LED daytime running lamps.
>. New headlamp design, with standard Xenon high intensity discharge lamps (HID) and LED accent lighting. Articulating headlamps are available.
>. New hood and black chrome waterfall grille.
>. New rear fascia design with integrated exhaust outlets.
>. New LED taillamps.
>. New 19 inch and 20 inch aluminum wheel designs.
>. Monochromatic exterior appearance with chrome accents.

For the most part, the powertain is unchanged. All Buick Enclave trims still arrive with a direct injected 3.6 liter V6 with continuously variable valve timing rated at 288 horsepower and 270 pound feet of torque. A traditional Hydramatic six speed automatic is again the sole transmission, but it has been upgraded with next generation software to improve smoothness, response and shift feel. Front wheel drive is standard, with all wheel drive optional. As the system is designed primarily to improve traction in inclement weather, there is no low speed transfer case (when properly equipped, the Enclave can tow up to 4,500 pounds 700 pounds less than the workmanlike Traverse). Burning regular unleaded fuel, the EPA estimated fuel economy is a respectable 17 mpg city and 24 mpg highway on FWD models and 16 mpg city and 22 mpg highway on AWD models.

2013 Buick Enclave Engine :
The powertrain for the Enclave teams GM’s 288 horsepower, 3.6 liter V-6 with a six speed automatic that was, in fact, co-developed with the unit Ford uses in its Flex crossover. The combination in the Enclave’s received some tuning this year, with reprogramming for the transmission to reduce the hunting in upper gears that’s been a complaint since the Enclave was new. In our brief drive, shifting between gears felt more at ease at higher speeds, while the Enclave never strained to reach speed. The engine’s usable powerband sits higher in the rev range than in some crossovers, giving it a perky feel, still torquey enough at city speeds.

Acceleration was also pleasantly adequate, with the 288 horsepower V6 propelling the Enclave to 60 mph in an estimated 8.5 seconds. We’d prefer more torque down low, as that is what today’s latest turbocharged engines are delivering, but the six was smooth and relatively efficient at cruise. The remapped six speed transmission shifted smoothly and smartly, without the unnecessary hunting for gears that is common on the seven and eight speed gearboxes that seem to be in vogue these days.

Yet even in the face of stiff competition, many have discovered that the Buick makes a good argument for itself. The automaker points out that its full size CUV is doing very well, with its sales growing each year (Buick sold a record 57,783 Enclaves in 2011, making it more popular than the three row crossovers from Acura, Audi and Lincoln). Plus, conquest sales are strong, as nearly half of all Enclave buyers switched from non General Motors brands into the flagship Lambda. Those are the types of statistics that keep challengers up at night.
