The new Subaru Forester goes on sale in Japan in November and will roll out across Europe and the US in early 2013. Subaru Australia’s David Rowley confirmed the 2013 Subaru Forester will launch locally early in the first quarter of 2013, either in January or February.

The Subaru Forester is a compact crossover vehicle that blends many of the best attributes of a sport utility vehicle with the ride and driving dynamics of a car. It offers the capability of Symmetrical full time All Wheel Drive, as well as a versatile rear cargo area with liftgate, underfloor storage and up to 68 cubic feet of cargo capacity.

The 2013 Subaru Forester has been revealed for the first time in a series of leaked brochure images. Published by enthusiast website Carscoop, the images confirm the all new fourth generation Forester SUV will share much in common with the Subaru Impreza hatch with which it shares its basic underpinnings.

Like the Impreza which launched in Australia earlier this year, the new Subaru Forester features aggressive ‘hawk eye’ headlights and a bold upright grille, along with chunky proportions and boxy tail lights at the rear. Aiding front visibility is a new small window at the base of the A pillar near the side mirrors.

The cabin appears almost identical to the new Impreza, featuring an information screen high on the centre stack, a satellite navigation screen in high grade models and a simple multi function three spoke steering wheel. Silver trim highlights offset the otherwise dark grey interior.

Subaru has long been the go to brand for wagon and crossover driving members of the crunchy elite. With entries from nearly every brand impinging on its territory, however, Subaru’s ability to update and adapt one of its bestselling vehicles without compromising its core attributes will be crucial for the brand’s success.

Subaru’s brand new 2013 Forester SUV has been given an early unveiling this week, thanks to a new set of leaked brochure images out of Japan. The images reveal that the fourth generation of Subaru’s trusty wagon will smooth out the styling of the current model, while taking cues from the new Liberty and Impreza models.

Now in its fifth year of production, the 2013 Subaru Forester is the only compact crossover utility with standard all wheel drive. The sturdy and rugged but easy to use wagon is built on sedan underpinnings and offers a remarkably roomy interior, the handing of a passenger car, good ground clearance, and compact exterior dimensions that make it easy to park in even the smallest of spaces. It’s virtually the ideal balance for small families in the Snow Belt and other locations that place a premium on the safety and capability of all wheel drive.

2013 Subaru Forester Exterior :
The brochure also confirms high grade Forester variants will be equipped with the company’s EyeSight safety technology, incorporating adaptive cruise control, automatic pre collision braking, lane departure warning and vehicle sway warning, among other functions. Like the Impreza, all variants are also set to feature seven airbags and a reversing camera. More details on the new 2013 Subaru Forester will be revealed closer to the car’s overseas launch in the coming weeks.

In the single interior shot, the center stack and IP appear to have been redesigned to better match those of the new Impreza, including the familiar and functional three knob HVAC controls. A new LCD screen for the infotainment system sits above that; at least in this configuration, it appears Subaru’s interior designers have gotten over their obsession with mid ’80s Nissan radios.

According to these pages, the new Forester is larger all round than its predecessor, riding on a 2640mm wheelbase (up 25mm), while measuring 4595mm long (35mm), 1795mm tall (15mm) and 1695mm wide (20mm). The big new body will ensure improved space in the cabin, including a larger storage area, now listed at 488 litres (or 505 litres depending on translation) with the rear seats up compared to 450 litres in the current model. As revealed in the earlier spy photos, the interior of the new Forester follows the formula of the current model: that is, copy the Impreza’s dash over to the larger SUV and resize to suit.

Despite its almost 9 inches of ground clearance, the Forester isn’t awkwardly tall or overly aggressive looking as are a few of its competitors. And its distinctive front end is a familiar site in the Subaru heavy precincts in mountain towns, snowy regions, and much of New England and the Pacific Northwest.

The 2013 Subaru Forester is a compact crossover SUV available in six trim levels: 2.5X, 2.5X Premium, 2.5X Limited, 2.5X Touring, 2.5XT Premium and 2.5XT Touring. The X and XT indicate different engines. Standard equipment on the 2.5X includes 16 inch steel wheels, full power accessories, keyless entry, cruise control, a height adjustable driver seat, a tilt-only steering wheel, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity and a four-speaker sound system with a CD player, an auxiliary audio jack and an iPod/USB audio interface. The Alloy Wheel package adds 16 inch alloy wheels and roof rails.

The 2.5X Premium adds on 17 inch alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, upgraded exterior trim, roof rails, a panoramic sunroof, an eight way power driver seat (plus two way lumbar), a tilt and telescoping steering wheel and a reclining rear seat. The 2.5XT Premium is virtually identical, but has a more powerful engine and isn’t eligible for the following options. The All Weather package (standard with the manual transmission, optional with the automatic) adds heated front seats, heated mirrors and a windshield wiper de icer. The Plus package adds foglamps and a touchscreen audio system interface. A TomTom sourced navigation system can be integrated into this interface.

2013 Subaru Forester Engine :
Every 2013 Subaru Forester comes standard with all wheel drive. The 2.5X trims feature a 2.5 liter horizontally opposed (or “boxer”) four cylinder that produces 170 horsepower and 174 pound feet of torque. A five speed manual transmission with a hill holder function is standard on the 2.5X and 2.5 Premium trims. A four speed automatic is optional on those trims and standard on the others. In Edmunds performance testing, a 2.5X with the automatic went from zero to 60 mph in 10.1 seconds, which makes it one of the slowest small crossovers. EPA estimated fuel economy is 21 mpg city/27 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined regardless of transmission.

f you want more power, the pricier 2.5XT model delivers 224 horsepower and 226 lb ft of torque from the same size engine, courtesy of a turbocharger. This model of Forester is considerably quicker, but can only be ordered with the mediocre four speed automatic transmission. Again, the widely spaced ratios plus some degree of turbo lag handicaps its overall progress. We rather suspect that next year’s Forester will switch over to Subaru’s Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT), which delivers fuel efficiency in other models that’s considerably higher than the supplanted automatic.

The symmetric all wheel drive system delivers substantial grip coming out of corners, not to mention surefootedness in deep snow and along muddy and rocky trails. And the car’s mountain goat genes are assisted by its 8.9 inches of ground clearance. Source: laricheautomotive.com, autocarrelease.com.
